A little while back I asked my mom to recommend a few good knitting books for beginners. She recommended the following books.How to Knit by Debbie Bliss
Knitting for the first time by Vanessa-Ann
Big Book of Knitting by Katharina Buss
Knitting for the first time is probably the best for that if you have little ones to knit for is great for moving past the scarf stage.
The last one is probably the best for instruction but does not provide simple projects as you go.
